Brabham BT15 #am67
As an offshoot of Jack Brabham Motors Limited, Brabham Racing Developments Ltd. (which quickly changed to Motor Racing Developments Ltd) was set up in 1962 in New Haw, near Byfleet in Surrey by the legendary Aussie racer Brabham himself and his great friend and supremely talented race engineer Ron Tauranac. This partnership went on to produce a very long line of highly successful racing car designs with their mission for MRD to construct single seaters and sports-racing cars for private owners whilst the Brabham Racing Organisation would run a works Brabham teams in various formulae including F1. The Brabham/ Tauranac partnership lasted for just under twelve years. Tauranac carried on and then one Bernie Ecclestone bought in and then in 1971 bought up the company to allow Tauranac to depart and set up the Ralt race team. With Ecclestone at the wheel customer car manufacture ceased so they could concentrate all their resources on F1 and from a total of 343 World Championship races contested, Brabhams took 35 Grand Prix victories – an impressive ten per cent success rate.
The BT15 was developed as a Formula 3 car in 1965 and had the same space frame / bodywork / suspension specification and dimensions as the BT16 F3 car and the BT14 Formulae Libre car. Fifty eight were made and in total 42 major victories were accumulated by Brabham drivers including Courage, Ahrens, Crichton-Stuart, Williams and Troberg amongst others.
Chassis number AM67 on offer for you today was built for Graham Coaker, the ‘C’ in March, in 1965 and raced all over the UK in 1966 with Graham (the full listing and verification from Duncan Rabagliati is in the history file). Acquired by the present owner in 2006 it has subsequently been completely rebuilt with the help of the excellent organisation of Steve Hart Race Preparation and to date has run at the Historic Grand Prix Cars Association test day at Silverstone, the Vernasca Hillclimb and at Aintree as a demonstration event. This sensational car with the Ford / Holbay 997cc four cyclinder engine and the Hewland Mk8 gearbox is beautifully finished in Yellow and ready once again to set the tracks alight, the car comes with full FIA papers and is such a fun and exciting race car and is now eligible to race at GOODWOOD !!
